Hi buddy

All things bright and beautiful. Nice and wonderful. Mate you are living in a world where human feelings have no place. We are born to kill and eat the meat of others, oppress the one next to you and the list goes on. That's what human beings are. Practical world.

Ahimsa to all beings is only in Buddhism but they are first Sinhalese and then Buddhists. If not by now in extinction. Along with that Buddhism too in extinction except for business tycoon Dalai Lama's Buddhism.

All the leaders who were there before and soon after independence lived in harmony on the misery of poor majority, notwithstanding the tribe Sinhala, Tamil or Muslim. It was a cosy life for few privileged and no qualm from higher echelon.

It was only when the Sinhala lot in that club tried to keep all and sundry to themselves that the Tamil lot raised the issue of discrimination and lined up the poor Tamils to fight against Sinhala chauvinistic hegemony. All beautiful words. For that serious misjudgement the entire Tamil leadership who hoodwinked the innocent Tamil youth paid a terrible price at the hands of devil incarnate created by them and them alone.

You could quote from Bretcht, Russel and many in that ilk but ground reality is different. This battle like many others in the history will end up only when conqueror vanquished the fallen. Just hold your breath for that day. If in doubt read history again and again. But not the distorted one. Bear in mind Sinhala tribe has no history where they have attacked the innocent but in the case of brutes retaliated with ferocity and paid with interest.

(Ref #6) How come somebody else has written under my pseudonym? (Accidentally I suppose, as I have often found the name field in the comments box already populated with an arbitrary name when it should have been empty! A debugging job awaits the site developer).

So I am forced to comment 'on this excellent article' written for the idealists. It fails to see the mood of the people, as the central indicator that directs governance. Prez MR has successfully turned the mood of the people from one seeking peace to one for all out war. It is a monumental achievement and I acknowledge and congratulate him. He has used many tools like the media, propaganda, military successes, etc., not always honourably, and a good measure of well concealed deceit as well, to wean the people away from peaceniks and slant them towards his hard-line thinking. So the peace lobby can benefit by studying his methods.

Basically, unless there is a tangible incentive or benefit, people of this world who are ready to exploit their kith and kin, let alone the downtrodden or underprivileged, for their selfish ends, will not be motivated to change their views for lofty ideals. (The painful comparison between developed and underdeveloped world, in a macro scale, is an ever-present example).

It appears to me that only unbearable turmoil has the power to focuses one's attention towards peace' especially for a people who are yet to experience the horrors of civil or world wars, before they can understand the significance of peace.

The time has not yet come for peace. We are caught in war psychosis

I am very touched by this article. It is very encouraging to read the views of balance minded people. This article should be published widely in Srilanka to make aware of the tru sitaution and understading this is the only way forward for Srilanka. If we unite and stand together we will be power of the indian subcontinent and if we stand divided we will remain as a 3rd or even 4th world for many years to come.
Long live Mr. Cooray .

I agree with Upali Cooray that we should stop the war and have peace. But this cannot be by devolving power and by the proposals of APC but by having the agenda to grant the independent state of Tamil eelam to the Tamils of North East.

Thouggh, there is a well managed propaganda by the government and the Sinhalese, terrorism is not the problem in Sri Lanka as heard by many of us. The problem is something else.

The Tamils of North East have a liberation movement of the masses, for the independence of its people. They expressed their desire for freedom in a mild form even before 1948, the year in which the country was declared a "dominion" under Britain.

The Tamils have been expressing by various means or methods, initially, democratically, through their elected representatives, then by means of non violent protests; under Federal Party, then by resolutions and mass referendums in the North East, under Tamil United Liberation Party, led by SJ Chelvanayakam.

Every time the Tamils used a democratic method, the past governments ruthlessly destroyed the method by violence using the armed forces. Our leaders were kept in house arrest and prisons, for a long period of time.

Instead of addressing and granting their legitmate right to secede, the governments used armed violence using the military, forcing the Tamils to resort to armed resistance against the atrocities of the armed forces. As a formula for survival LTTE was born.

The governments also popped up puppets trying to subdue the mass movement for liberation of the North East.

The problem in Sri Lanka is not the "method" or means used by the Tamils to obtain Independence. The problem is with the Sinhalese. They are unable and adamantly unwilling to grant the legitimate right of Tamils to have Tamil Eelam. Terrorism started from the military and upto this date it continues. It should be stopped by the International Community.

In an environment characterised by injustice, intolerance irresponsible misrepresentation of history Tamilweek should be congratulated for featuring this refreshing speech by Upali Cooray that goes to prove to the growing band of cynics - not excluding myself - that there is space for the Sinhaka and Tamil people to come together in a future united Sri Lanka - now in her last sighs of breath after 3 decades of merciless battering on her vital resources - both material and human. If we can invoke "the belief every person regardless of his political and action is entitled to human and fundamentalist rights" and unless we do so we will "revert to a life of savageryy and barbarityous". Good Sir, this we have already succeeded in the latter for many years now. Remember the execution of the 5 outh in Trincomalee and the aerial bombing in the Wanni that killed hundreds of school children. And, of course, Kebbitigolawa. Look at the savagery and barbarity with which nearly 30 innocents (so far) have been done to death at Nugegda not to mention the vanfull of little children killed by, of all things, a landmine in what is curiously called "rebel-held territoryt" It will be wonderful if you can restore to the present and future generation "a united society where ethnicity plays no part at all in our relationship or in our daily life" Is this utopia possible during our time? I share your dream that a day will come when "Tamil plantation youth use their improved examination skills to help in - not only the fishermen in Batticaloa with their fish catches - but also their deevara sahodarayas in Negombo, in the deep South and elsewhere . I am entirely with you in your exalted dreams of a just and free society if all communities. Many men of good intent like you - nurtured as you are with the teachings of Marx and Brechtt - should be closer to the apparatus of State power. This is now and has been for years in the hands of the thug, the killer, the bootlegger, the drug peddler, the extortionist, the racketeer,
the crooked administrator, the car-permit thief in robes etc etc who have all hijacked what should be the seats of the people's power. Parliamentary power has been hijacked from an electorate that is said to be 96% literate. Learned men of good intent like Tissa Vitharana are made to remain impote t. Our system of governances is so hopelessly deformed with people driven to penury even educated people are asking for even a benevolent militry dictator - even the type like Franco or Pinochet will do for the moment. Or a demagogue like JRJ playing the role of Sngapore;s Lee Kuan Yew. The present Parliamentary power structure reminds one of the old Tamil story of a garland of flowers in the hands of the monkey.

But, Comrade, never mind my mournful and melancholy mood.
Take the hopeful and otimistic road of our friend Bob Marley
and sing :-

"Observing hypocrites mingle with the good people we meet Good friends we have or good friends we have lost along the way ..... Everythings gonna be alright (From - No woman! no cry)
