So long as hunger for power is present among the politicians one cannot expect impartiality. The situation in Sri Lanka is complex. In Sri Lanka, no proper account was given for various murders not only of journalists but also of educationalists and other law abiding citizens. It has been an unfinished syndrome. The root cause for the abuse of human rights basically lies on the politicians. The politicians have clandestine dealings with the underworld criminals for purpose of achieving their own goals, while the terrorist organizations such as the LTTE and other organizations wait for the opportunity to have dealings with the same underworld criminals on contract basis. The assassinations of several Parliamentarians (such as A.Amirthalingam, V.Yogeswaran, Dr.Neelan Thiruchelvam), Ministers and Government Officers, journalists together with the abductions of Vice Chancellor of the Eastern University and some others are cases on point and still remain a mystery. The accusing fingers point out that politicians are behind the scene. For instance, the release of Naval Rating, after he was sentenced for six years, by the late R.Premadasa was a case in point. Any type of communications with terrorists should have been in conformity with the existing laws. Had there been a powerful Senate like in America, the Senate can monitor the movements of every member and demand explanation. Since the terrorists have infiltrated even in the Government Armed Forces and Departments, the terrorists and unscrupulous politicians have every opportunity to silence the voice of the professionals and educationalists. What is essential is that law and order should be maintained at any cost when there is a battle between the visible and the invisible. Therefore, the people have a great task on their shoulders to elect their representatives coming from a decent background in order to preserve this freedom of opinion for the existence of democracy.
